South Africa alone.
A lack of theatre time for the simplest cataract surgery is a huge frustration for doctors. Even in regional hospitals and clinics medical professionals are hindered by a huge backlog of patients.

The problem is there are so many

with no finances, access to doctors, transport & hospitals.
Our aim is to
take ocular surgery to those who need it most.

We believe non-profit organisation Africa20Twenty has a solution.

 

Africa20Twenty was inspired by the ‘Eyes of Zion’ mobile operating room, an initiative spearheaded by Prof Assia Professor at the Faculty of Medicine Tel Aviv University Israel. The mobile operating room is essentially a travelling clinic which performs routine cataract surgeries in rural communities without access to medical services. Its lifechanging work has restored the sight of hundreds/thousands of people - and with the right resources, Africa20Twenty aims to do the same.

 

In February 2019 Africa20Twenty founders  Dr Johann Snyman (Ophthalmology Registrar),

Dr Kaps Moodley (Ophthalmologist and Clinical Head MPEH) and Peet Pieterse joined forces to find sponsors for this mission.

Mobilise the operating room.

 

Inspired by the World Health Organisation’s Vision2020 mandate to help the visually-impaired wherever possible, Africa20Twenty is taking the surgical theatre to the people.

 

Multiple Africa20Twenty ocular surgery mobile units will offer operating room procedures in the most unreachable areas across the continent.

 

These traveling units staffed by specialist ophthalmology teams will change lives in the most profound way, providing simple cataract surgeries otherwise unavailable.
